Gwangju, Gyeonggi

Gwangju is a city in the eastern part of the province of Gyeonggi in South Korea with 236 688 inhabitants ( July 2009). It is located around 25 km south-east of the Korean capital, Seoul. In July 2010, they will be merged into a new metropolis called Seonggwangha together with the neighboring cities of Seongnam and Hanam.

Name and symbols

The city's name is composed of the syllables广( 넓을 광 far ) and州( 고을 주, district) together. The symbol tree, flower and bird of the city are the gingko tree, the forsythia and the swallow.
