Biography

From her father learned Gwen Guthrie, who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, with 8 years of playing the piano at school, she worked with classical music. Later they sang for fun at street festivals and parties and was at the beginning of the 1970s a member of the singing group The Ebonettes and The Matchmakers. 1974 Guthrie was hired as a studio singer for Aretha Franklin, at whose hit song I'm in Love it replaced an ill singer Cissy Houston next. Also for Roberta Flack, she sang when shooting. A year later, Gwen wrote the title Supernatural Thing, which became a U.S. top 10 hit by Ben E. King. More songs they wrote for the Pointer Sisters, and Isaac Hayes.

The first solo album, which was created in the late 1970s for Columbia Records, never hit the shelves. He then moved Guthrie to Jamaica, where they stayed for a year. Back home, she got a contract with Chris Blackwell of Iceland Records. In 1982, the first official album Gwen Guthrie was published, whose musical spectrum R & B, reggae and dance music included. They celebrated their biggest success in 1986 with the worldwide hit Is not Nothin ' Goin ' on But the Rent.

Until 1988, the American had some more small hits in the UK. In the 1990s, she worked primarily as an arranger and producer. Gwen Guthrie died in 1999 at age 48 in Orange County, New York, to uterine cancer and was buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey.
