Gwilym Prys Prys-Davies, Baron Prys-Davies

Gwilym Prys Prys -Davies, Baron Prys -Davies ( born December 8, 1923) is a British / Welsh Labour Party politician and life peer. He was the candidate of the Labour Party in the historic Carmarthen by- election, 1966 in which Labour was defeated by Plaid Cymru.

Life and career

Prys -Davies was born on 8 December 1923.

He served from 1942 to 1946 in the Royal Navy. In 1956, he became a lawyer ( solicitor). From 1957 to 1987 he was a partner at Morgan, Bruce and Nicholas SLRs from 1987 to 1993 as a consultant (Consultant ).

From 1974 to 1978 Prys -Davies served as special advisor (Special Advisor) of the Minister for Wales ( Secretary of State for Wales) operates. From 1968 to 1974 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Welsh Hospital Board. From 1967 to 1969 he was a member of the Welsh Council. From 1978 to 1982 he was a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Economic Community.

He was opposition spokesman ( Front Bench Opposition Spokesman ) for Northern Ireland from 1982 to 1993 and for Welsh Affairs From 1983 to 1987 he was responsible for health ( Welsh Affairs ) By 1987 until 1995..

From 1997 to 2001, Prys -Davies, President of Swansea University. He was 1998-2000 President of the NPFA ( Cymru ). From 1989 to 1995 ( or 1990 to 1997 ) he was a member of the British - Irish parlamentary body.

Membership in the House of Lords

Prys -Davies was appointed on February 9, 1983 Life peer as Baron Prys -Davies, of Llanegryn in the County of Gwynedd. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 2 March 1983.

As subjects of political interest he gives to the devolution of Wales and the Welsh language legislation.

Prys -Davies was one of several special committees ( Lords Select Committees ) to. From 1988 to 1989 he was a member of Murder and Life Imprisonment, 1983-1984 Parochial Charities ( Neighbourhood Trusts Bill and the Small Charities Bill) and 1995 to 1996 in between Central and Local Government Relations. From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the Joint Committee on Statutory Instruments from 1999 to 2002 at the Select Committee on Delegated Powers and Deregulation.

In the 1980s, he volunteered for the prevention of terrorism, education, local elections in Northern Ireland in 1985 and new tobacco products to word. In the 1990s, he spoke to the use of the Welsh language, education and libraries, and the National Health Service. Prys -Davies said, in the 2000s, among others, on the subjects of reform of the House of Lords Act templates to higher education and multiply the Public Services Ombudsman (Wales ) Bill.

Honors

He is an Honorary Fellow of Aberystwyth University, Swansea University, at Trinity College Carmarthen and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. Him the honorary degree Doctor of Laws ( Hon LLD) was awarded in 1996 by the University of Wales. He got this title in 2009 also from the University of Glamorgan. He is an officer of the Malterserordens.
