Gwilym Simcock

Gwilym Simcock ( born February 24, 1981 in Bangor, Gwynedd ) is a Welsh jazz pianist, horn player and composer.

Biography

Gwilym Simcock received as a child prodigy already eleven years the British Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in piano and French horn. Later, he studied classical piano, French horn and composition at Chetham 's School of Music in Manchester, where he came up with about 15 years of music teachers Les Chisnall and Steve Berry with the Jazz in touch. Subsequently, he studied jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London with John Taylor, Nikki Iles, Nick Weldon and Geoff Keezer. After his graduation, when he was honored for his achievements with the Principal 's Prize, he worked with a trio formation, with the radio program New Generation Artists he guested on BBC Radio 3 in 2006; his solo performance at the Wigmore Hall during the London Jazz Festival 2006 was also broadcast by the BBC.

With his debut album Perception (2007) participated as guest musician Stan Sulzmann, John Parricelli, Phil Donkin, Martin France and Ben Bryant. With his trio he stepped on festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival 2007; This year he was also on the recommendation of a Chick Corea solo concert at the Piano Festival Ruhr, which was broadcast on WDR radio and released as an album.

In his trio Simcock plays with drummer James Maddren and bassist Yuri Goloubev since 2009. He also worked in other band projects, such as Malcolm Creeses Acoustic Triangle, Tim Garland's Lighthouse Trio, Stan Sulzmanns formation NEON with Jim Hart and Bill Bruford's Earthworks band. He also played with musicians such as Dave Holland, Lee Konitz, Bob Mintzer, Bobby McFerrin, Kenny Wheeler, Iain Ballamy, Julian Argüelles, Peter King, Don Weller, Steve Waterman and Torsten de angle New York Jazz Guerrilla.

As a French horn player played Simcock in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra ( NYJO ), the BBC Big Band and with Kenny Wheeler in his tours in 2003 and 2005.

As a composer, Simcock has received several commissions; he led in August 2008 as part of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London his Piano Concerto " Progressions " with his trio and the BBC Concert Orchestra, which was broadcast live on BBC television 2. Another piano concerto he had with the NDR Big Band in Germany (Hamburg Suite). For his trio album Blues Vignette (2009 ), he wrote the "Suite for Cello and Piano" with smooth transitions between composition and improvisation.

Awards

Since 2001, when he won the Perrier Award 2001 ( Young Jazz Ensemble ), Simcock won numerous awards, as the BBC Jazz Award 2005 ( Rising Star ) and the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist (2006-2008). In addition, he has twice been nominated for the BBC Jazz Award. The Evening Standard chose him to the 1000 most influential people in London. In 2011 he was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.
