Gwyddion (software)

Gwyddion is a free evaluation software for many raw atomic force and scanning tunneling microscopes. ( The name comes from a magician from Celtic mythology of Wales, see Gwydyon. ) Among other things, by its license status, it is widely used in science, research, teaching and education.

Availability

The program is distributed as free software, including source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License ( GPL). Officially supports many Unix-like and Windows operating systems. In the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu it can be installed direct from the standard repositories. It is currently the only open source solution for AFM data analysis in active development.

Functionality

Gwyddion serves the analysis of height fields and other two-dimensional raster data. While it is used primarily for data from different types of scanning probe microscopy ( as RKM, MKM RTM SNOM / NSOM ), there can be used, for example for the analysis of profilometric data.

It reads over 50 different file formats and can filter among other things, the raster data maximize (for example, high-pass filtering to normalize the height field) and contrasts, they extruded as a three-dimensional, render shaded area and represent dyed from a ( false ) color palette, the image data by the depth scale maps to a created from the palette gradient. Furthermore, by breaking it down into foreground and background using different segmentation techniques particles extracted and automatically detected, counted and measured. Using the Fourier transform, for example, certain repeating pattern can be extracted.

Technology

The data processing and storage in its own file format (. GWY) is carried out in double precision.

It is programmed in C and has a GTK - based graphical user interface.

Development

The software is developed for many years mainly by David Necas ( " Yeti " ) and Petr Klapetek by the Czech Metrological Institute ( Český institut metrologický, CMI). Version 1.0 was released on 10 March 2004, September 30, 2006 version 2.0.
