Gymnogeophagus
Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys
Gymnogeophagus is a genus of cichlid that occurs in middle America in the catchment area of the Río Paraguay, Río Pilcomayo, Río Paraná and Río Uruguay, in the upper Rio Guaporé and in some smaller rivers in southeastern Brazil. The name comes from the Greek " gymnos " ( = naked ) and Geophagus and refers to the unscaled ( naked ) snout against the related genus of cichlid Geophagus.
Features
Gymnogeophagus species are small to medium sized cichlids and 9 to a maximum of 17 inches long. The body is moderately elongated, flattened high backs and sides of the head more or less acuminate with a partially very steep brow line. Genus is typical of the lack of Supraneuralia ( parts of the vertebrae) and a forward-facing spine before the support system of the dorsal fin.
Reproduction
Gymnogeophagus species show a variety of reproductive methods. Many species are mouth brooders, while others are open breeders. Some parents form a family, others a mother's family.
