H. C. Robbins Landon

HC Robbins Landon (full name: Howard Chandler Robbins Landon, born March 6, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts, † 20 November, 2009 Rabastens, Tarn, France) was an American musicologist.

Life

Robbins Landon studied music at Swarthmore College and Boston University. He then moved to Europe and worked as a music critic. Since 1947, he studied in Vienna with Joseph Haydn and is an acknowledged expert on these composers. His book Symphonies of Joseph Haydn was published in 1955, followed by the five -volume work, Haydn: Chronicle and Works in the late 1970s. Together with his wife Christa Landon he also edited numerous compositions of Haydn.

Robbins Landon also published work on other composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Antonio Vivaldi. He coined the term critical intentioned " Barococo " for certain kinds of stereotypical performances of baroque and early classical music, the beneficiary whose "Besides listening", and was sponsored by the advent of long-playing record.

1956 undertook Robbins Landon an attempt by the addition of c- minor Mass by Mozart, the 1991 also unfinished Requiem of Mozart.

Landon, who had advocated, among other things for the establishment of care Haydn in Eisenstadt, 1989 he received the Joseph Haydn price of the Burgenland state government.

1994 there was a controversy when several piano sonatas had appeared, the Robbins Landon initially regarded as newly discovered works of Haydn, but then had to explain to counterfeiting ( in fact they were from Winfried Michel ).
