His formative teachers were here Gideon January Verdam Pieter Rijke and Leonard Frederik Kaiser. On April 21, 1863, he received his doctorate with a thesis on the bend of the media circle, under the title Over the invloed de buiging op de hemel van hoogten bright met the meridiaanmeter bepaald on the mathematical and physical faculty of Doctor of Philosophy.

In 1862 he had already been working as a teacher at the Gymnasium in The Hague, had from 1866 a year to the HBS Utrecht informed and in 1867 professor at the Polytechnic School in Delft. After he was on May 11, 1872 became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, he was appointed on September 3, 1872 Professor of Astronomy at the University of Leiden. He accepted this task on 20 December 1872, the inaugural De method, wilted thans bij de beoefening d sterr customer gevolgd been moet and was connected therewith director of the Leiden Observatory. As a faculty of the University of Leyden, he also participated in the organizational tasks and the same was 1886/87 Rector of the Alma Mater. Sande Bakhuyzen was a member of several national and international learned societies of his time. He was a member of the Astronomical Society of Leipzig, 1894 Corresponding member of the Bureau des Longitudes, a member of the International Association of Geodesy and employee of the Carte du Ciel. Since 1900 he was permanent secretary of Geodesy and president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Moreover, some not insignificant Awards he was awarded. He was Commander of the Order of the Dutch Lion, Commander of the Order of Orange -Nassau, winner of the Kronordens of Prussia, winner of the St. Stanislaus of Russia, he was an officer of the Legion of Honour and Officer of the Order of Leopold of Belgium.
