H. M. Bateman

Henry Mayo Bateman with the artist name H. M. Bateman (* February 15 1887 in Sutton Forest, New South Wales in Australia today, † February 11, 1970 in Gozo, Malta) was a British illustrator, caricaturist and cartoonist.

Life

Batemans parents could at unzivilsierten fifth continent will find no favor and returned shortly after his birth in London. 1901 encouraged the young artist in an exhibition of art in black and white at London's Victoria and Albert Museum to follow his inclinations. After long resistance against his father to study art this but the 16 -year-old financed the visit of the Westminster School of Art His performances were good, so there could he begin studying at London's Goldsmiths Institute after graduation. In the years during his studies he already received his first paid jobs. In later years he waged a fierce battle with the IRS for its income tax payments.

Bateman was married, both daughters of the couple were artists. He spent the last years of life on the Maltese island of Gozo. His topics included, among others caricaturist behaviors and reactions of the British upper class.

Honors

  • Since 1997 located at his former residence in London's Clapham in Nightingale Lane 40, a commemorative plaque, a Blue Plaque.
