H. Newell Martin

Henry Newell Martin ( born July 1, 1848 in Newry, County Down, † October 27, 1896 in Burley -in- Wharfedale, Yorkshire ) was a British physiologist.

Life

H. Newell Martin studied at the Universities of London and Cambridge. In 1876 he was appointed the first professor of physiology at the founded in the same year, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he worked with George Henry Falkiner Nuttall. In 1879 he married Hetty Cary, that of Confederate General John Pegram widow. In 1885 he became a member of the Royal Society. After his wife's death in 1892, Martin left Baltimore in 1893 and returned to Britain.

Work

Martin is regarded as the founder of scientific physiology in the United States. Of particular importance are his work on cardiac physiology, which were made possible by his then startling, preparations of isolated perfused mammalian heart.
