H. W. J. Thiersch

Heinrich Wilhelm Josias Thiersch ( born November 5, 1817 in Munich, † December 3, 1885 in Basel, mostly known as HWJ Thiersch ) was a German philologist, Protestant theologian and church servants of the early Catholic Apostolic Church.

Life

Thiersch was born in Munich. He studied after leaving grammar school in 1833 at the ( present ) Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich until 1835 Philology in Munich, especially with his father, Friedrich Thiersch, but also with Friedrich Schelling and Johann Joseph von Gorres. In 1835 he moved to the University of Erlangen, where he studied with Hermann Olshausen and Gottlieb von Harless theology until 1837. 1837-1838 Thiersch heard lectures at the University of Tübingen, where he completed his studies. In Erlangen, he joined the fraternity Uttenruthia.

From 1839 he worked as a lecturer in Erlangen. 1843 was Thiersch associate professor of theology at the University of Marburg, 1845 carried the appointment as full professor. He played a major role as the spiritual father of the Foundation of the Marburg Wingolf. His early works include his 1841 monograph published by De Pentateuchi Version Alexandrine. In 1850 he had to give up his professorship because of his connection to the congregations Catholic Apostolic. In 1853 he gained after long struggles again a position as a lecturer at the Faculty of the Philipps- University. 1864 twisted Thiersch to Munich, 1875 to Basel, where he died on 3 December 1885.

Connection to the congregations Catholic Apostolic

Starting at the end of the 1830s began Thiersch for the Catholic Apostolic movement ( erroneously referred to as " Irvingites " ) to care. In 1842, he met in Munich know the evangelists Caird, from which he received the Testimonium. He was among the first Germans who joined this movement. On October 17, 1847, he was sealed in Frankfurt am Main by Thomas Carlyle and stood before the Ascension, founded on 1848 Catholic Apostolic church in Marburg. In 1850 he had to give up his chair due to his community affiliation. Thiersch sat down heavily in writing for himself and his community, both with the University and with the National Church and the Government of Hesse- Kassel apart, which threatened the Catholic Apostolic church members with Repressialien. The church services were temporarily banned in Marburg.

  • 1850-1867: Shepherd with the Apostles ( Apostolic pastor ) for Northern Germany and Teilnehnehmer the council in Albury
  • 1864-1869: Officer angel in Munich
  • 1867: Shepherd with the Apostle for Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland
  • 1869-1875: Officer angel in Augsburg

Family

Thiersch was the son of the philologist Friedrich Thiersch and a brother of the physician Karl Thiersch and the painter Ludwig Thiersch. He was married to Bertha Zeller, a daughter of Christian Heinrich Zeller. Together they had 13 children, including August Thiersch. The father of his son Paul Wigand (* November 24, 1853, † 30 July 1921), the Professor of Botany at the Philipps University in Marburg Julius Wilhelm Albert Wigand, founded in 1861 the old botanical garden.
