Haageocereus

Haageocereus pacalaensis

Haageocereus is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus honors the German gardener, botanist and nonfiction author Walther Haage.

Description

The species of the genus Haageocereus grow shrubby to tree-like, with outstretched and crawling, lengthwise hinstreckten, ascending or erect shoots. The shoots usually consist of many ribs with closely spaced areoles, from which arise abundant thorns. Areoles, from which flowers emerge, often have extra bristles.

The tube- to bell-shaped flowers are white to pink or red, open at night and remain open until the next day. The flower tube is strong and meaty. The flower cups and the corolla tube are occupied with numerous sheds and a few to many hairs. The stamens are in a single circle.

The fleshy, spherical fruits are green to red and studded with a few scales and hair. The flowers rest is enduring. The egg-shaped seeds are shiny black and irregularly pitted.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Haageocereus are common in low altitudes in western Peru and northern Chile.

The first description of the genus was made in 1934 by Curt Backeberg. The type species of the genus Cereus pseudomelanostele. Belong to the genus of the following types:

A synonym of the genus is Peruvocereus Akers.
