Haas House

The Haas House is a building in Vienna's 1st district Innere Stadt at Stock-im - Eisen-Platz opposite the Stephansdom.

History

The first after the medieval building new building at this point, the carpet house " Philipp Haas & Sons", was a splendid building in iron stand construction. It was built in 1866-1867 in the style of historicism and was the first major department store in Vienna. Architects of the building were August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Null.

After the destruction of this building towards the end of the Second World War, a new building by Carl Appel and Max Fellerer was built from 1951 to 1953. This building was demolished in 1985 and replaced by the present Haas-Haus, which opened on 19 September 1990. Designed by the architect Hans Hollein building is in particular a strong urban accent mirrored by the bay window. Inside it was originally coined by a conically widening upwards central space that is gone but lost after the conversion made ​​in 2002 by the Spanish textile company Zara. As the building forms a contrast to the opposite St. Stephen's Cathedral, it caused at the time of new construction for controversial debates.
