Haast, New Zealand

Haast is a place on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The town is near the mouth of the Haast River and spread over the three districts Haast Township, Haast Beach and Haast Junction. The place is located in the area of ​​Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

At the 2006 census, the population of the statistical district Haast, which also includes the wider environment of the village, 297 permanent residents, respectively.

Is named the place after the German geologist, naturalist and explorer Julius von Haast.

The region has been inhabited since the 1870s by Europeans, but only since the 1960s Haast is connected by paved roads with the rest of New Zealand. Today, the State Highway 6 runs through Haast, leaving the coast here and via the Haast Pass into the interior, so that Haast falls to a certain role as a supply center.

The main economic activities are agriculture, fishing and tourism.
