The Haast Pass is the southernmost and with only 563 m above sea level, the lowest elevation pass road over the Southern Alps in New Zealand ( Arthur 's Pass: 924 m, Lewis Pass: 863 m). It is named after Julius von Haast, who defeated him the first European.
Geography
The Haast Pass connects the town of Haast on the West Coast Wanaka in Otago on State Highway 6 The road leads first along the Haast River with the famous Gates of Haast. The bridge over the Haast River is New Zealand's longest one-lane bridge. Shortly before the apex crosses the road, the Fantail Falls. After crossing the pass in front of the place Makarora the road leads past the northern end of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea to Wanaka.
As part of the main route from the Franz Josef Glacier in the center of New Zealand tourist almost inevitably cross this pass.
History
The Haast Pass was only in 1965 released for public transport. He follows one already used by the Maori way to the west coast, the transportation of these Jade ( Greenstone, Green Nephrite) used.
