Habib Mangal

Habib Mangal (* 1946 in Star, Khot, Qalandar district, Khost Province ) is an Afghan politician. He was a candidate for the 2009 presidential election in Afghanistan.

Life

Mangal is a trained physician who also has a doctorate in social sciences. According to a profile of the news agency Pajhwok Afghan News he attended the Rahman Baba - secondary school, he received his medical education at the Medical University of Kabul. Where he obtained his doctorate in social sciences, is unknown. 1977 and 1978 he worked as a doctor at the hospital in Khost. Subsequently, he was in charge of health affairs in the province of Samangan.

He joined the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan ( PDPA ) in 1964, when he was 18 years old. According to Pajhwok Afghan News he was from 1964 to 1981 worked as an activist for the party. He helped establish the student movement at the University of Kabul in 1972 and 1973. He was imprisoned for his activities in the student movement. According to Pajhwok Afghan News was a second arrest for "political reasons " and " intra-party differences " from 1977 until 1978.

In 1979 he became a member of the Central Committee of the PDPA. From 1980 to 1986 Mangal held a senior diplomatic post. In 1986, he participated in a Constitutional Loya Jirga in part as a representative of Paktia province. From 1987 to 1991 he represented the Paktia in the Wolesi Jirga, the upper house of the Afghan Parliament. When the PDPA administration fell in Afghanistan in 1992, he traveled to the Netherlands, where he remained until 2009. There he was active in the Afghan community. During the 2009 presidential election he was a candidate in a field of 38 competitors. He reached 7339 votes.

Diplomat

After a profile article in the agency Pajhwok Afghan News he was from 1980-1986, the Ambassador of Afghanistan to the Soviet Union and non- resident ambassador to Finland, Romania and Cyprus.
