HachijÅ-jima
Hachijo -jima (Japanese八丈 岛) is a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs geographically to the Izu Islands and administratively to the city of Hachijo Tokyo Prefecture.
In criminal law, the Tokugawa Shogunate, the island served as a place of exile for criminals from eastern Japan, ie Mino Province and east of it.
Geography
The 69.48 km ² large island Hachijo -jima is located in the Pacific Ocean south of Sagami Bay and the Izu Peninsula.
7.5 km to the west is the 3.08 km ² island of Hachijo- kojima (八丈 小岛, dt " small Hachijo Island "). To distinguish between these Hachijo -jima is (八丈 本 岛, dt " Hachijo main island " ) (八丈 大 岛, dt "big Hachijo Island " ) therefore also called Hachijo- Honjima or Hachijo- Oshima.
Fauna and Flora
Hachijo -jima is located as part of the archipelago in the Fuji -Hakone -Izu National Park.
Language
On Hachijo -jima of Hachijo dialect was spoken, has preserved many archaic forms the eastern dialects of Japanese. Older residents only, however, have a passive understanding and younger none at all.
