Haga, Gothenburg

Haga is a neighborhood of the Swedish city of Gothenburg. It is known for its picturesque wooden houses and cafes in the style of the 19th century. Originally a suburb for the working class with a bad reputation to Haga gradually developed into a popular place for tourists and locals. During the 1980s, the neighborhood was a major overhaul. The houses were either renovated or demolished and replaced by post-modern replicas.

Today live in Haga about 4000 people, a hundred years earlier it was 15,000, an indicator of gentrification, which the district has gone through. Haga is also a church with the same boundaries as the district. It is thus, according to the area, the smallest parish in Sweden.

History

The neighborhood was built in the mid 17th century at the behest of Queen Christina. Haga was thus Gothenburg 's first suburb. Originally it was decreed that the area can be destroyed in the event that the land would be used by the Crown or in the case of a city siege, as the district was located outside the city walls. In the 1690s, this arrangement was applied and 34 houses were demolished to build a protected corridor, a caponier, from the city walls to the fortress Skansen Kronan.

Only in the 1840s saw the establishment of new industries in Gothenburg, which led to an influx of workers and Haga made the first working-class neighborhood in the area. This led to a housing shortage during the 1870s and the creation of other working-class neighborhood to the rapid population growth to master. After a far-reaching expansion of the district began in the 1920s, a decline in population. Many factories were closed and Haga developed into a residential area.

A new development plan was in 1962 before the demolition of the old buildings in the district. This led in 1970 to the founding of the Haga group that campaigned for the preservation of the original architecture. Between 1973 and 1977, the demolition took off due to local opposition and some buildings have been renovated even by local authorities.
