Hagestein

Hagestein is a town in the Dutch municipality of Vianen in the province of Utrecht, part of the scenic area " Vijfheerenlanden " and is located on the south bank of the Lek. Until 1986 it was a separate municipality. By 2002 Hagestein was subordinated to the remaining part of the municipality of Vianen province of South Holland.

History

Before 1820 Hagestein was already part of Utrecht. Before the construction of the castle Hagesteins the settlement was called Gasperde (s).

1251 presented squire Gijsbert van Gevengoye the Hagestein Otto II Castle of funds available that returned him the castle again as fiefs. In the 14th century Hagestein January V. gave Arkel of the settlement Gasperden city rights. 1405 conquered Count William VI. Holland town, they destroyed and also the castle. This city rights were lost.

Frederick III. , Bishop of Utrecht pin had helped in the capture of Hagestein. The place is subject to the cathedral chapter of the congregation. The chapters left in 1583 to build a new castle, which was torn down in 1855.

Hagestein is especially known for the weir in Lek.
