Geology and Nature

The ridge is predominantly of quartz-bearing rocks ( mica schist, quartzite, shale) built and due to the very thin layer of humus high risk of erosion. At the eastern Hahnenkamm back, the so-called High Mark this material has been exploited for decades in a now disused quarry at the quarry Hemsbach. In the meantime, has formed on the bottom of the quarry by inflowing groundwater and precipitation water of a mountain lake, because after the operation at the end of the break water drainage has been set. The oligotrophic waters serves as a spawning ground for amphibians, for example, Toads.

A striking view point represents represent those " Oak " This centuries -old oak is already hollowed out by multiple lightning inside, but still defying the stormy winds over the mountain ridge.

The forest on the Hahnenkamm has been used since the Middle Ages for the extraction of firewood, by Köhler and pitch boilers. Computerized measurements of the Senckenberg Institute in Biebergemünd have shown that the tree line has over the meadows and pasture landscape in Kahlgrund hardly changed in subsequent centuries. In the 19th century, there was controversy because of overuse; 1840, the district was divided between the municipalities and Hörstein Kälberau. Extensive reforestation by fast-growing coniferous trees - pine, larch and spruce - were necessary.

In the future the proportion of deciduous trees - oak, beech - are raised again to 40%. The site was explained on the basis of the Bavarian Forest Act of 1975 by the Regional Plan, Bavarian Lower Main (December 2002) to the protected forest, ie Clearings are permitted only in exceptional cases. It should only be used as much wood as can grow in the forest; to a surface is scoured just about every ten years.
