Hai Rui

Hai Rui (Chinese海瑞, Pinyin Hǎi Rui, * 1514, † 1587 ) was a Chinese official who criticized the Emperor Jiajing because of its neglect of official duties and therefore was tortured and thrown into prison. After the death of Hai Rui Jiajings was released and was even given the post of censor.

Therefore Hai Rui is an example of an integrity Mandarin. His grave is located in the southwest of the city of Haikou and can be visited.

Wu Hans play

1961 written by the deputy mayor of Beijing, Wu Han, a theater piece entitled Hai Rui is deprived of his office. With an essay in which the literary critic Yao Wenyuan declared the piece for deviant, began the Cultural Revolution in November 1965.

At initiated by Mao Zedong criticism of this work, the leadership of Peking University responded in February 1966 with the holding of Wu Han Congress.
