Hailakandi

D1

Hailakandi ( Bengali and Assamese: হাইলাকান্দি Hailakandi [ Hailakandi ] ) is a town in the Indian state of Assam. It is the administrative seat of the district of Hailakandi. The population is 29,634 ( 2001 census).

Hailakandi is in the Barak Valley in southern Assam, about 30 kilometers from Silchar. To the east of the city over the river flows Dhaleswari, a tributary of the Barak. The Barak Valley is surrounded on three sides by mountains and therefore largely isolated from the rest of Assam. Historically and culturally, however, there are close connections to East Bengal (present day Bangladesh). Thus, the majority language is not the Assamese, the official language of Assam, but the Bengali.
