Haim Oron

Chaim " Junas " Oron ( born March 26, 1940 in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli politician and current Chairman of the left-wing party New Movement - Meretz.

Chaim Oron comes from the Kibbutz Movement, and was founded in 1968 Hashomer Hatzair secretary. Later he became one of the founders of the Peace Now movement. 1988 Oron was first deputy in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, where he has since in addition to other activities in all legislative periods belonged to the Finance Committee. Oron was a member of the United Workers Party Mapam and then the Meretz, which had emerged from a coalition with the liberal Shinui Mapam and the Ratz party in the Knesset in 1992 and operated under the name Meretz Jachad since 2003.

Between 1994 and 1995 Oron officiated as treasurer of the Histadrut trade union before he served from 1999 to 2000 in the government of Ehud Barak as Minister of Agriculture. After that, Oron moved temporarily from the Knesset, but was re-elected in the 2003 elections to parliament. After losses his party in the Knesset elections in 2006 and the withdrawal of Yossi Beilin as leader of the Meretz Jachad, Oron was the new chairman of the party.

In the 2009 elections, the Meretz leadership came under Orons under the name New Movement - Meretz, which has been supported by leading Israeli intellectuals such as Amos Oz and former politicians of the Avodah Shlomo Ben Ami, Uzi Baram and Avraham Burg, but lost two seats and since then only represented with three deputies in the Knesset.
