Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation refers to the transplantation of body hair. Hair transplants are mainly used in hair loss on the application.

History

Since the 18th century is of - reports dislocations hairy skin parts in animals and humans - varying degrees of success. Until the 19th century there was in this respect no significant developments. 1939 first described the Japanese dermatologist Okuda, the breakdown technique (punch technique ) in hair transplantation. He used tiny punches (English punches ) to transplant hairy skin parts in other areas of the scalp, as well as eyebrows and mustaches. The transplanted hairy skin produced parts in her new position successfully hair.

However, Okuda saw this procedure only available for a burnt offering. He did not even thought of the possibility of using his technology against the typical androgenetic ( hereditary ) hair loss.

Since the 1960s, the techniques have been considerably enhanced. In 1986, the Munich doctor Manfred Lucas at the Seventh International Congress of Dermatologic Surgery in London the area-wide treatment with mini - or micro -grafts before and was world's one of the first who propagated this method.

As pioneers of the latest method of Follicular Unit Extraction, are Ray and Angela Woods, the first time practiced this method by its own account in the early 1990s. The doctor Inaba, however, had already been described in a text published in 1996 a similar method of removal of individual hair follicles. How long has he practiced this technique is unclear.

The various techniques differ greatly in total; comparative controlled studies are largely lacking.

Methods of Hair Transplantation

Punch

The punch or punching technique is the oldest method. Dr. Okuda transplanted with 4-mm cylinders hairy skin parts.

Strip & establishment mini / micro grafts (MMG )

This method is the most commonly encountered Hair Transplant Method in Germany. Here, a hairy skin strip from the fringe of hair removed and dissected in this so-called medium skin parts and small pieces of skin with hair roots. One calls this individual hairs or hair Islands also mini- or micro -grafts. Then after the grafts are placed in the previously prepared areas. The procedure is performed sitting under local anesthesia and takes 3-9 hours, with the majority of the time is needed to prepare the grafts.

Strip removal & creation of follicular units ( FUI or FUT )

This method is the development of mini / micro graft technique. Here also a hairy skin strip is removed from the hair wreath. However, this under a high resolution microscope in the natural bundles of hair ( follicular units) is parsed. These follicular units ( Follicular Unit = FU) are then inserted into the pre- preparatory areas.

Follicular Unit Extraction ( FUE)

The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE ), extraction of follicular units, referred to the collection, temporary storage ( Storage) and implantation ( insertion) of follicular units ( FU). The units are natural groupings of one to four (in rare cases five) hair. This method is one of the currently most modern ways of hair transplantation. Not only is it more modern than the strip technique, but also gentle, because in precise work, the hair follicles are removed individually in the form of follicular units ( FUs ).

For hair transplanting these follicular units are of great importance, since hair is not individually, but grow in natural bundles. In an FUE hair transplant these groups (usually from a small group of about 1-5 naturally belong together roots) taken with a hollow needle from the hair ring area and used in the respective areas. To engage extraction needles are used, the grafts can be found ranging in size from 0.5 mm to 1 mm. Before transplanting a check on the health of the group is. Up to implantation, the grafts are kept in a nutrient solution. Subsequently, the physician transplanted follicular units in the bald head areas.

The great advantage is, that the exit point must not be sewn, it closes itself on the same day. After the surgery about a week smaller scabs may be visible. Even if the remaining small punctiform scar is likely, but these are by the naked eye hardly recognizable. Another great advantage of this method is the ability to transplant and body hair. In the transplantation of body hair but it must be noted that these usually have a different texture and color as head hair. Disadvantage of FUE method is the increased time required for the individual removal. The amount of work for such a treatment is very intense. For the transplant of 1000 grafts a full working day may be counted.

Cost of FUE Hair Transplant

The cost of hair transplant depend not usually on the area, but on the number of grafts. Through a lump sum of costs per transplanted follicular unit calculation programs can help in the presentation of the expected costs. An accurate calculation of the required follicular units is therefore not possible, since in the cost estimate the density of the hair must be in the adjacent region of the target zone involved. For this reason, the exact cost can only be given after an investigation or with the help of photographs of the affected areas.

Treatment options

The use of micro grafts / FUE hair transplant ( surgical hair transplant root ) comes today not only in the upper head area with hereditary hair loss ( androgenetic alopecia ) but also, inter alia, at

  • Reconstruction of eyebrows
  • Bart replacement after harelip correction
  • Replacement of pubic hair
  • Cicatricial alopecia traumatic
  • Burned alopecia areata
  • Alopecia triangularis congenita
