Hakkâri

Hakkari ( Syriac -Aramaic: ܐ ܰ ܟ ݁ ܳ ܪ ܳ ܐ Akkare, Kurdish: Colemêrg ) is a Turkish city in southeastern Anatolia and has 58 584 inhabitants, the county 81 549 inhabitants ( 2012). It is the administrative center of the homonymous province. Hakkari is located close to the borders Turkey - Iraq - Iran. Hakkari was a long time disputed border town between the Ottoman Empire and Iran. The Ottomans granted the local Kurdish prince a certain degree of autonomy in order to secure the borders.

The Armenians call the city Ilmar, and the Mamluks, who ruled here, Colamerg. The Kurds call it Colemêrg and in Turkish it was formerly called Çölemerik. The Aramaic name for Hakkari is Akkare and means farmer.
