Hala Sultan Tekke

Hala Sultan Tekke is a 1816 -built mosque at the same salt lake. It lies about 5 km southwest of Larnaca in the district Larnaca in Cyprus. It is regarded as one of the most important shrines of Islam.

History

When the Arabs conquered Cyprus 647, Hala Sultan was also present, the maternal aunt of the Prophet Mohammed. These fell in the later Hala Sultan Tekke of her mule and died. She was buried on the spot and her grave became a place of pilgrimage. 1760 Sheikh Hassan began to build a mosque. In 1816 the mosque was completed, so that the grave since then is in a side room of the building. Later pilgrim hostels were added. Hussein ibn Ali ( Hejaz ) was exiled by the British to Cyprus, the grave of his Turkish wife is also located in the mosque.

Archaeological sites

Hala Sultan Tekke is a major Bronze Age locality. First excavations took place on behalf of the British Museum in 1897 and 1898, first under HB Walters. 1948, the Cypriot Antiquities by investigations. Vassos Karageorghis in 1968 and 1974 worked, the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, led by Paul Åström from 1971. The Great Bronze Age city was probably built around 1600, but its greatest extent reached in the first half of the 12th century in the late Bronze Age and covered then about 2.5 ha you had, as Enkomi, a regular map with a rectangular street grid. In the city, among other workshops was excavated by copper casters. Room 94N ( Area 8) contained molds for sickles, an anvil stone and blower nozzles ( tuyeres ). Findings also suggest the presence of an ivory carver. His work shows strong Egyptian influence. It also has rich graves were uncovered.
