Haleh Afshar, Baroness Afshar

Haleh Afshar, Baroness Afshar OBE, ( born May 21, 1944 in Tehran, Iran) is a professor of politics and women's studies at the University of York, where she also studied in the 1960s and Visiting Professor of Islamic Law at the Faculté Internationale de Droit comparé the Université de Strasbourg. Her PhD she earned from the University of Cambridge.

In June 2005 she was admitted to the Order of the British Empire. On 11 December 2007 she was admitted as a non-party life peer in the House of Lords and Afshar was created as Baroness Afshar of Heslington in the County of North Yorkshire. Afshar is the first female member of Iranian origin in the House of Lords. She sits there as a Cross Bencher.

Life

Afshar grew up in Iran, where she also worked a long time as a journalist. She is active on several committees, among others in the British Council and the United Nations Association. Haleh Afshar is the founder and chairman of a Muslim women's network and advises the British government on policy issues regarding Muslim women and Islamic law.

Family

Haleh Afshar Afshars father was Hassan, a professor of law at the University of Tehran. She is married to the professor of mathematics, Maurice Dodson, who is also active at the University of York.
