Haljala Parish

Haljala ( German: Haljall ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian Lääne- Viru with an area of ​​183.02 km ². It has 2815 inhabitants ( 2009).

In addition to the main town Haljala the parish includes the villages Aaspere, AASU, Aaviku, Auküla, Essu, Idavere, Kandle, Kavastu, Kisuvere, Kõldu, Kärmu, Lihulõpe, Liiguste, Pehka, Põdruse, whizzed Tatruse, Vanamõisa, Varangu and vole.

Haljala was first mentioned in 1241 in Liber Census Daniae. The Church of Haljala dates from the 14th century. It was built as a fortress church, preceding observation post of the castle of Rakvere and signal tower. Today, it is in poor structural condition. In summer do not find regular services in their place.
