Hallettsville is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Lavaca County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 77 and U.S. Highway 90A, 150 km east of Austin just north of the Countyzentrums in middle southeast Texas, is in the southeast 130 km from the Gulf of Mexico and has a total area of 5.8 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Named the place was one of the first settlers, who in 1831 settled here in 1836 and donated the land for the site after John Hallett.

Demographics

According to the census of 2000, there were 2345 people in 1019 households. The population density was 406.0 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 77.10 % White, 16.46 % African American, 0.17 % Native American, 0.17 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.48 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.62% were of mixed descent, and 11.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1019 households 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.0 % were married couples living together. 14.6% were single mothers and 38.4 % were non-families. 35.6 % of all households were single-person households, and 21.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size amounted to 3.00.

25.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.5 % from 18 to 24, 23.4% 25-44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 83.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 78.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,089, and the median income for a family $ 38,080. Males have a median income of $ 31,250 versus $ 20,365 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,811. 17.4 % of the population and 16.4 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 21.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.5 % of those 65 or older.
