Halunkenpostille

The scoundrels of Piety is a collection of poetry by the German writer Fritz Grasshoff, which first appeared in 1947. It is one of the most successful poetry books of the postwar period; numerous texts and ballads were set to music and recorded by well-known artists.

The author

Fritz Grasshoff (1913-1997) earned his money with pop lyrics; best known is his Evergreen Take me captain, on the journey, he wrote for Hans Albers. His appeal, however, he saw as a painter, illustrator, translator and writer. His books of poetry, found little favor; He had greater success with his sometimes bawdy lyrics lyrics and ballads, some of which were gladly sung as songs and many are gathered in the outputs of scoundrels Piety.

The book

The scoundrels Postille contains more than 100 poems. Since they are rhymed throughout, they exist almost at for song settings. Theme is the people and hardships of the lower layer, small anarchists who is the author of time-critical, often with surprising humor and great affection. Graßhoff was even in a milieu - his father, only sailor, and later coal merchant - grew up in the pubs, drunks, prostitutes, thugs and scoundrels were commonplace. The titles of the poems usually have the same on this subject for: rascal song, Penner story in Sideshow Yourself, Moritat does the freezing gas works director or one you will shanghaien you and Captain Byebye.

The book was a great success, the total circulation is now, surprisingly for a poetry book, more than 200,000 copies. Graßhoff loved to give his books a long subtitle and sometimes joined them in new editions. You can Graßhoff with his scoundrels postils texts readily described as a descendant of Erich Kästner, Walter Mehring and Ringelnatz.

Effects

For some cabaret texts, were created, and so it is not surprising that many large German Chansonnièren ( Hannelore Schroth, Hanne Wieder, Kirsten Heiberg and Inge Brandenburg) occurred with recitations of his poetry and song presentations. Some composers went to edits, such as Hans -Martin Majewski, Norbert Schultze and Alfons Nowacki. In the mid-sixties Graßhoff was discovered and appreciated by young people; in the progressive youth movement of the frets were settings of today popular " rascals song" My horse is old and no longer or sung by the " rags brotherhood " scroungers, Penner, oblique fools, tinkers, thieves want. The singing duo Schobert & Black scooped, especially for their first two LPs, also from this fund, set to music by Wolfgang " Schobert " Schulz.
