Hamilton is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located in Harris County and is its administrative headquarters.

Geography

Hamilton is located northeast Harris County. The nearby towns are Pine Mountain, Waverly Hall and Oak Grove. The nearest major town, Columbus, is located about 31.5 kilometers south-west, the capital of Georgia, Atlanta, about 122 kilometers north-east. The city covers an area of 5.4 km ².

Population

The population is 375, of which 47.2 % men and 52.8 % women (as of July 2007). The average age of the citizens of Hamilton is 39.3 years. 30 % of residents are African American, 67.8 % White and 1.7 % are of Asian origin. In 2006, the average annual income per household was $ 34,500, which is below the average of Georgia ( $ 46,832 ). The income of about 12.4 % of the population is below the poverty line. Thus, the share of the poor is lower than the average of Georgia.

Education

Hamilton has three public schools, the Harris County High School, Park Elementary School and the Harris County Carver Middle School.

Personalities

Benjamin F. White, one of the most influential American composers of Christian music in the late 19th century, and editor of the hymnal " The Sacred Harp", lived and worked since 1842 in Hamilton.
