Hamish MacCunn

Hamish MacCunn ( born March 22, 1868 in Greenock (Scotland ); † August 2, 1916 in London) was a Scottish composer and conductor.

Life

MacCunn was the son of a ship owner. Both parents were musical. His first pieces he wrote five years. At the age of fifteen, he went on a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in Kensington, where he studied under other at Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford. From 1888 to 1894 he worked there as a professor.

He had followed in 1887 with the overture "The Land of the Mountain and the Flood ," the more romantic compositions with a Scottish influence, his first success. In 1888 he married Alison Pettie, the daughter of the painter John Pettie, a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The marriage went forth a son. His father, himself an accomplished musician, furthered his career. 1894 is his opera " Jeanie Deans " in Edinburgh out that two years later had its premiere in London, where she remained until the 1920s in the repertoire. In 1898 he created a commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society, London, in order "Ballet music from Diarmid " for his eponymous opera.

In 1916, he died completely revised at the age of 48 years from the effects of throat cancer.
