Hamlin Garland

Hannibal Hamlin Garland ( born September 14, 1860 in West Salem, Wisconsin, † March 4, 1940 in Hollywood, California ) was an American writer. He is considered one of the most important naturalists in American literature.

Life

Garland spent his youth in the American Midwest, which appears as the background for most of his short stories and novels. In his works he often sat for reforms, as in A spoil of office (1892 ) for the ideas of the Populist Party. Essays on his naturalistic literary theory, which he called Veritismus were published in crumpling idols 1894.

His 1917 published autobiography A son of the Middle Border was so successful that he was with A daughter of the Middle Border, published in 1922 a sequel. This work was awarded the 1922 Pulitzer Prize in the category of biography or autobiography.
