Hampshire County (West Virginia)

Hampshire County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Romney.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast of West Virginia, on the east by Virginia, to the north by Maryland and covers an area of 1670 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Allegany County ( Maryland), Morgan County, Frederick County (Virginia), Hardy County and Mineral County.

History

Hampshire County was born on December 13, 1753, formed from parts of Frederick County and the Augusta County, both in Virginia. It was named after the English county of Hampshire.

Demographic data

1900-1990

According to the census in 2000 lived in Hampshire County 20,203 people in 7,955 households and 5,640 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
