Hamtramck is a city in Wayne County in the southeast of the U.S. state of Michigan and part of the Metro Detroit metropolitan area referred to Detroit.

In 2000 Hamtramck had 22,976 inhabitants; until the official 2009 estimate, the number of inhabitants declined to 20 062.

Hamtramck is surrounded with the exception of a small portion of the western border of the city of Detroit. Part of the town boundary runs along the city's Highland Park. Hamtramck is named for the French- Canadian soldier Jean François Hamtramck, the first American commander of Fort Detroit, Fort Shelby.

Hamtramck was originally settled by German farmers. After the opening of the Dodge Brothers factory in 1914 attracted many Polish immigrants in the area. In the past thirty years attracted a large number of immigrants to the city. According to the 2000 census, the proportion of foreign-born population was 41.1 %.

Geography

Hamtramck is located approximately eight kilometers from the center of Detroit. Interstate 75 runs along the western border, Interstate 94 passes near the southern city limits.

Culture

Hamtramck flourished between 1910 and 1920, when thousands of European immigrants, mainly Polish, were attracted by the growing automobile industry. The city still bears many reminders of the Polish ancestry in family names, street names and businesses. A recent survey, 26 native languages ​​of students in Hamtramck are spoken.
