Han Pijesak

Han Pijesak ( Serbian Cyrillic Хан Пијесак ) is a small town and municipality in the eastern part of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

History

Han Pijesak was first mentioned in 1664 in a travelogue of Evliya Çelebi.

The site evolved from a rest stop on the trade route from Sarajevo to Zvornik, which has been preserved in place names (such as: Gasthof sand, indicating underground and building materials ).

During the Bosnian War, much of the non-Serb population was expelled.

Geography

The city is located about 60 km northeast of Sarajevo.

Neighboring municipalities are Milići, Olovo, Rogatica, Sokolac and Vlasenica.

Population

At the 1991 census, the municipality of Han Pijesak had 6,348 inhabitants, of whom

  • Serbs: 3,674 ( 57.87 %)
  • Bosniaks: 2,543 ( 40.05 %)
  • Yugoslavs: 68 (1.07 %)
  • Croats: 7 (0.11 %)
  • Other: 56 (0.90 %)

In the capital lived 3,203 people, including

  • Serbs: 2,875 ( 89.76 %)
  • Bosniaks: 215 ( 6.71% )
  • Yugoslavs: 64 ( 2.00% )
  • Croats: 4 (0.12 %)
  • Other: 45 ( 1.40% )

1971 had amounted in the community still 7,804 the number of inhabitants. Then as now, the Serbs set an absolute majority.

The municipality covers a total of 26 locations: Babine Gornje, Berkovina, Brložnik, Džimrije, Gođenje, Han Pijesak, Japaga, Jelovci, Kraljevo Polje, stuff, Krivače, Kusače, Malo Polje, Mrkalji, Nerici, Nevačka, Pjenovac, tarpaulin, Podžeplje, Potkozlovača, Ravanjsko, Rečica Rijeke, Rubinići, Stoborani and Žeravice.

Economy

The economic structure of the city is dominated by forestry and wood processing industry.

Traffic

Han Pijesak is located on the main road M19, which connects Sarajevo on Zvornik Belgrade.
