The Hanau Hauptbahnhof is the main intersection of rail transport in the eastern Rhine -Main area.

History

Today Hanau main station was built as part of the Bebra - Hanau railway as a temporary terminus Hanau East and opened on 1 May 1867. Functional predecessor of the railway station was opened in 1848 as a railhead terminus of the Frankfurt- Hanau Railway Company, which was located west of downtown on the site of the current breakpoint Hanau West.

Hanau east was the Verküpfungsbahnhof between the Main-Spessart Railway, which had been built as an extension of the railway line Frankfurt- Hanau to Aschaffenburg, and the route to Bebra. At the same time Bahnbetriebswerk Hanau heath lands was established. Hanau East received a reception building, the station as an island between the track direction Bebra (Northern Railways ) and the distance to Aschaffenburg ( Southern Railways ) was built.

The location of the station resulted from the crossing of the River Main to Steinheim on the Steinheim Main Bridge, which was at right angles to cross the river, and the subsequent track alignment south of the river to Frankfurt am Main. The so- periodic penalty point explains the location of the station far from Hanau city center. Even today, the result is a significant problem for the line management of public transport in Hanau, who is serving two centers: The train station and the inner city bus node Freedom Square. By the end of World War II, the station was served by a tram Hanauer tram.

On May 15, 1927, the " Hanau Station East" was renamed " Hanau Hauptbahnhof".

The original station building was demolished in 1966 and replaced by a north of the railway tracks lying reception building with a spacious station forecourt. The original location as an island station can still be seen on the track numbering and access roads of the area between the tracks park-and -ride parking lot today. The floor level of the main level of the new station was essentially determined by the position of the existing pedestrian underpass that has been retained. Since the station was partially built in a former river bed of the River Main, there are always, but especially after thunderstorms, problems with water penetration. The passengers accessible part of the reception building was fundamentally transformed by the object of the baggage and Expressgutbeförderung the early 90s of the last century.

The justification - according to German train - was not the lack of cost-effectiveness, but structural conditions. Since only a remodeling at the station was made and the German railway their decision not denied by the competent authorities, earned her the harsh criticism from the city government and politics.

Progress, however, the modernization of Odenwaldbahn was ( RMV line 64) that will increase the number of trains on the axis Odenwald- Frankfurt significantly increased and in further steps.

Planning

A suburban railway line should be coming out from the center of Frankfurt and the Frankfurt East Station tunnel as Nordmainische S-Bahn to Hanau. Preparatory works are already underway. Since future with this expansion have ended much more trains in Hanau than before, is the number of tracks to be increased. In addition to a new platform 1a there should be 100 in the future, an additional 8 track and a track. Accessibility is to be created on all platforms through the installation of lifts, also the station should be thoroughly modernized and visually embellished.
