History

The Hancock County was on 13 January 1825 formed in the territory of Illinois, adjacent to the Pike County and named for John Hancock, a member of Congress and Governor of Massachusetts.

The first courthouse was built in Montebello, on the banks of the Mississippi River. 1833 the administrative headquarters was moved to Carthage. The still existing courthouse was built in 1908.
