Hancock County (Tennessee)
Hancock County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sneedville.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern Tennessee, bordered to the north Virginia and has an area of 579 square kilometers, of which 3 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County ( Virginia), Scott County ( Virginia), Hawkins County, Grainger County and Claiborne County.

History
Hancock County was formed on January 7, 1844 from parts of Claiborne County and Hawkins County. It was named for John Hancock, the first governor of Massachusetts and President of the Continental Congress.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Hancock County 6,786 people in 2,769 households and 1,938 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.91 percent White, 0.49 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.34 percent from other races groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,769 households out of which 31.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers and 30.0 percent were non-families. 27.7 percent of all households and 13.5 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average household size was 2.91 people.
23.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 percent between 18 to 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.7 percent were older than 65, the average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 19,760, and the median income for a family was $ 25,372. Males had a median income of $ 23,150, women $ 18,199. The per capita income was $ 11,986. 25.3 percent of families and 29.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
