Hancock County (Tennessee)

Hancock County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sneedville.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Tennessee, bordered to the north Virginia and has an area of 579 square kilometers, of which 3 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County ( Virginia), Scott County ( Virginia), Hawkins County, Grainger County and Claiborne County.

History

Hancock County was formed on January 7, 1844 from parts of Claiborne County and Hawkins County. It was named for John Hancock, the first governor of Massachusetts and President of the Continental Congress.
