Handball at the 2008 Summer Olympics

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing each a handball tournament was held in both the women and the men. Overall, in both tournaments twelve teams were allowed to play. Were allowed to be nominated 15 athletes per team; a total of 180 participated in handball players and 180 handball players in Beijing.

The preliminary round matches took place in the Olympic sports center with a seating capacity of 7000 seats. The finals wore the best teams in the National Indoor Stadium in front of 19,000 spectators.

Qualification

The following eligibility criteria were considered for both women and men:

Hosts China and the world champion (male Germany ) were automatically qualified for the finals. Added to this were the continental champions of Africa, America, Asia and Europe. In the event that China Asian champion, was moved by the respective runner-up. Due to the weak cutting oceanic participants in past major events of this continent was not an automatic starting place.

The remaining six places were distributed in spring 2008 at three qualifying tournaments with four teams each. The top two in each tournament qualify for the Games. Eligible for these tournaments were the second to seventh placed the 2007 World Championships, as well as the best in each of the other teams at the respective continental championships. The rest of the twelfth starting place at the qualifying tournament went to the continent, which had the best results in the World Cup. Oceania received the qualification chance only when a team of this continent at the World Championship under the first twelve landed (which in men was not the case ), otherwise the vacant quota place was also distributed to one of the other continents.

Remarkable

  • Since it had come at the Asian qualifying disagreements, both tournaments were repeated. Surprisingly had prevailed at the first tournament for women and Kazakhstan in the men Kuwait against the highly favored team from South Korea.
