History and Building
When planning began in October 1999, the Hangar- 7 was originally designed as a home of the Flying Bulls, whose fleet had become in the late 1990s too large for the available space at the Innsbruck airport. The hangar was designed by Austrian architect Volkmar Burgstaller, construction work on the premises of the Salzburg airport commenced in January 2001. On 22 August 2003, the building was officially opened.
Meanwhile, the building annually attracts more than 200,000 visitors.
For the restoration and maintenance of the flying machines of the Hangar- 8 was built opposite the Hangar- 7. It is very similar but slightly smaller than the Hangar- 7 in its construction. In contrast to the Hangar- 7 Hangar- 8 for visitors is normally inaccessible.
Architecture
The shape of the building is reminiscent of a grand piano. The 1200 -tonne steel frame construction built by the Waagner Biro AG, and, like the following construction of the hangar -8 on a design by ATELIER Volkmar Burgstaller. Despite the approximately 380 tons of special glass, spread over 1,754 glass panels of the outer casing, radiates from the building momentum and gravity. Inside the Hangar- 7 into an endless sky over the exhibits seems aufzutun. The steel and glass ellipsoid extends over 100 meters long, 14.5 meters high and 67 meters wide.
Exhibits
A Douglas DC-6B is the largest exhibit of the museum and also the largest aircraft in the Flying Bulls. The aircraft is the former President of the machine Yugoslav marshal and later President Tito. Due to the height of the vertical tail of the machine a special folding element had to be incorporating above the door of the hangar to go at all the machine in the hangar can.
