Haninge Municipality

Haninge is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and the historic province of Södermanland. The main town of the municipality is hands.

Geography

In Haninge the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago is with islands such as Uto, Ornö, Fjärdlång, Muskö, Kymmendö and Huvudskär and Gålö Peninsula, which is a nature reserve. Here also the National Park Tyresta is with walking trails, which together are 55 km long. South of the town Jordbro is the smaller nature reserve Gullringskärret.

History

South of Jordbro there is a larger burial ground from 2000 years ago. In the eastern part of the cemetery there are several upright stones, ships settlements and stone rings. In the vicinity of the survey Tornberget, which is at 111 meters above sea level the highest mountain in the municipality and the province, were found remains of settlements that are several thousand years old.

Between 1950 and 1968, the naval port Muskö, an underground naval base was built under the island Muskö.

Economy

In Haninge different universities are located. Thus, the Södertörn University College is located here and the Royal Institute of Technology has a branch office in the capital of hands. The latter has been greatly expanded in recent times.
