Hannah Webster Foster

Hannah Webster Foster ( born September 10, 1758 in Salisbury, Massachusetts as Hannah Webster, † April 17, 1840 in Montreal) was an American writer.

Life

Foster was the daughter of a rich merchant.

In the 1770s she began to write political articles for newspapers in Boston. Your epistolary novel Coquette; Or, the History of Eliza Wharton was published anonymously in 1797, her name was not published until 1866. Her second book, The Boarding School, appeared in 1798.

Foster married in 1785 John Foster with whom she had six children. When he died in 1829, she moved back to Montreal. Her daughters were the writers Harriet Vaughan Cheney and Eliza Lane Ford Cushing.
