Hannes Hafstein

Hannes Þórður Pétursson Hafstein ( born December 4, 1861 the court Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur, † December 13, 1922 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic politician and poet. He was the first Prime Minister of Iceland.

Life

Hannes ' parents were Pétur Havstein (* February 17, 1812, † June 24, 1875 ) and Krist Jana Gunnarsdóttir Havstein ( born September 20, 1836 † February 24, 1927 ). Hannes joined the Icelandic National School from 1880 and graduated in Law at the University of Copenhagen, which he finished in 1886.

Political and Professional Career

Hannes was from 1900 to 1901, 1903 and 1905 and again from 1916 to 1922 a member of the Icelandic parliament Althingi.

In 1904 he became the first Icelandic Prime Minister and the first Icelander, who represented Iceland in the Danish Cabinet as Iceland - minister in the government Deuntzer and there - was in contrast to his predecessor in this office, Peter Adler Alberti, opposite the Althing responsible. His office as Premier, he led from 1 February 1904 to the March 31, 1909; he was succeeded by Björn Jónsson. After this his first term, he was CEO of Bank of Iceland.
