Hannover Vampyr

HAWA H 1 " Vampyr " was a German glider. It was designed by Arthur Martens, Fritz Hentzen and Walter Blume - constructed in the framework of the newly established Akaflieg Hanover and built by the Hanoverian wagon factory under the direction of Hermann Dorner - all of them former World War II pilots and at the time students of Flight Technical Institute of the University of Hannover. It was designed by Georg Madelung. The vampire is considered the ancestor of the modern gliders.

Use

In 1921 he took the first time at the Second Rhön- contest on the water dome. Arthur Martens put on a flight 3580 meters in 5 minutes and 33 seconds back.

A year later, Vampyr was used in the same competition with altered structure and presented on 18 August 1922, one hour and 6 minutes of flight time, 8.9 km route and 108 m elevation, three new world records and thus made ​​the transition from sliding to the gliding. A day later, Friedrich Hentzen increased the flight time with the vampire 2 hours 10 minutes, on August 21, even at 3 hours 10 minutes at 350 m elevation.

A refined by Arthur Martens development was the Tramp, which was flown by him on IV Rhön Competition 1923.

Der Vampyr was heavily damaged in World War II and was in the basement of the Deutsches Museum. Cordes, a former director of Drägerwerke, took the initiative for the restoration of the aircraft. The hull was restored in the Deutsches Museum, the wing, the ribs were present of which only the spar and fittings and fragments in the National Federation of the workshop DAeC SH in Rendsburg Schachtholm. The wing was the Deutsches Museum at the German aeronaut Tags 1966 passed back.
