Hanoch Albeck

Chanoch Albeck (born 3 Augustjul / August 15 1890greg in Lowicz, now Poland; .. † January 9, 1972 in Jerusalem) was a Jewish scholar and the Mishnah outstanding researchers of his time.

Life and work

Chanoch Albeck studied in Vienna at the Rabbinical Seminary and received his rabbinical ordination 1915. 1921 he obtained an academic degree ( Dr. phil. ) At the University of Vienna.

From 1926 to 1936 Chanoch Albeck taught at the Academy for the Science of Judaism in Berlin Talmud and then emigrated to Palestine in 1936, where he has been appointed in the same year as professor and head of the Talmudic studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, a position which he held for 25 years.

He developed an extensive publication record and wrote among other things, pioneering introductions and commentary on the Mishnah, Baraita, Tosefta, Talmud, etc. He regularly published in the scientific journal Tarbiz.

Among his pupils were, for example, Avraham Goldberg and Abraham Joshua Heschel.

Family

His father, Shalom Albeck (1858-1920), was also an outstanding Talmudic scholar and worked mainly in Wroclaw.

Under Chanoch Albeck children are Prof. Michael Albeck, professor of chemistry, and Prof. Shalom Albeck, Lecturer in Jewish law (both at Bar- Ilan University ).

Albeck son, Aryeh Bachrach, fell in the Israeli War of Independence in 1948.

Awards

In 1957 Hanoch Albeck should receive the Israel Prize, the acceptance but refused - as well as the adoption of other prices - for reasons of principle from.

In 1959 he became a member of the Israeli Academy of Sciences.

For the "Introduction to the Talmudim " he received in 1969 the Bialik Prize.
