Work

Aanrud achieved fame through popular - realistic descriptions of the large rural life of his native valley, before there held the Industrial Age collection. The way of thinking of the simple farmers will be carried forward to the part in vernacular dialogue and in their simple, cozy expression. The landscape is described atmospheric, and humorous traits far outweigh tragic accents. Characters, plot and landscape description always make it a unit. Often children are the protagonists of Aanruds narratives, which therefore became popular children's books. Aanrud itself, however, this reading was intended for older readers. In the rest of Scandinavia, the UK and Germany his stories were soon used in translations.

Among the most successful stories Aanruds the representation of Sidsel long skirts (1903), a Norwegian shepherd girl his nickname because of his long skirts over long Rocks, a Christmas gift of his brother, gets heard. The story of the shepherd boy Sölve Solfeng (1910 ), whose home is located in a mountain valley in Norway, found widespread use. The content of both works revolves around the hard conditions under which the peasant children to work away from their parents and have to eke out a meager living. Despite this report about their hard lot outweighs an optimistic representation.

Great popularity in Germany was also connected with two translations of shorter stories Aanruds: the story collections Kroppzeug (1907 ) and Young (1910).

In addition Aanrud illuminated in a satirical way small middle class life in the big city in some comedies, but found no widespread beyond the borders of Oslo and beyond today are virtually unknown. In the comedy The Stork ( 1895), which plays in Kristiana at the end of the 19th century, tried a naive clerk to make contacts in the high society circles, but his cluelessness tricked by a ausnützenden royal plenipotentiaries always and only comes to the conclusion behind the truth.
