Hans Albert Einstein

Hans Albert Einstein ( born May 14, 1904 in Bern, † 26 July 1973 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts ) was a professor of hydraulics at the University of California, Berkeley. As the son of Albert Einstein and his wife Mileva Marić he had Swiss citizenship and was later a U.S. citizen.

Life

Hans Albert Einstein attended primary school in Zurich and began his studies in engineering at the ETH Zurich. Here he obtained his diploma in 1926 and his doctorate in 1936.

In 1927 he married Frieda Knecht, a teacher of German and literature at the ETH Zurich. From this marriage the children of Bernhard Caesar Einstein (1930-2008) and Klaus Einstein were born ( 1932-1938 ). Klaus Einstein died shortly after his emigration to the United States of diphtheria. The daughter Evelyn (1941-2011) was adopted. Hans Albert worked immediately after his graduation as an engineer for steel construction in Dortmund.

In the USA, Einstein continued his work on the transport of sediments, which he had begun in his time in Switzerland and Germany and covering part of his doctoral thesis. He first worked at the Agriculture Experiment Station in Clemson, South Carolina (1938-1943), and later for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Cooperative Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology in California. From this period also one of his most important publications on sediment transport in rivers.

Hans Albert Einstein was awarded in 1947 as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was also Professor of Hydraulic later. In 1970 he retired. During a visit of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts in June 1973, he suffered a heart attack, the consequences of which he died on July 26.

Like his brother, Edward suffered especially Hans Albert greatly from the separation of their parents, according to which the sons lived with their mother in Switzerland. However, the father continued to visit. The relationship with his father was long considered disturbed, but improved over time.
