Hans Bohn

Hans Bohn ( born December 23, 1891 in Oberlahnstein; † 10 May 1980, Frankfurt am Main ) was a German typographer, graphic designer and teacher.

Life and work

Bohn grew up in Bonn. He studied at the Technical School Offenbach (now Offenbach School of Design ) and was a student of Rudolf Koch and Franz Franke. Until his military service he was employed from 1913 to 1914 when Ullstein in Berlin. In 1919 he married the Jewess Helene Bohn (* 1891), who was also a painter and graphic artist. 1921 ( baptized Protestant ) son was born.

1919-1930 Bohn was our graphic designer working for Gebr Klingspor Offenbach as a type designer, then he was until 1944 a freelance graphic designer and worked for Ludwig & Mayer and D. Stempel AG. In 1937 he received because of his marriage to a Jewish woman banned from working through the culture chamber. His wife was deported to the extermination and concentration camp Auschwitz, where she died. After war service he taught from 1946 to 1956 as a professor at the Art School Offenbach ( Offenbach College of Design today ). For many German publishers, among others for Rowohlt (Hamburg), Snow Kluth (Darmstadt), Ullsteinhaus (Berlin) and Fischer ( Frankfurt am Main ) designed Bohn books and book covers.
