Educational ideas

In his first publication Open Curricula 1972 sound to the basic issues that Brügelmann has since been a recurrent theme in his projects, publications and presentations:

  • To determine the respect of the adults for the rights of children, their lives, and thus their learning as much as possible themselves ( open education );
  • Strengthening of teachers as researchers of their own practice;
  • Commitment to educational sciences research to represent the perspectives of all parties involved in an investigation;
  • Decentralization of responsibility in education as a school reform "from above" could not be successful;
  • Need statistical findings of major studies of educational research (as in PISA) to differentiate and enrich through dense case studies.

The onset in the early 1980s reform of literacy teaching in primary schools, Hans Brügelmann lasting influence, among other things, with its several editions books Children on the way to writing ( 9th edition 2013) and The Scripture invent, in which he has worked with the language experience approach for independent access of children to read and write and a greater fault tolerance. Since the late 1990s, he was a major player in the discussion of international achievement studies such as TIMSS, PISA, PIRLS (see What our schools?, 1999, and understand and design school, 2005). He is particularly critical of the dominance of the central evaluation against a teaching -related and contextual evaluation of teaching and learning processes and their success. Together with Axel Backhaus and Erika Brinkmann he developed in the LUST study and the project " Educational performance culture " ( Grundschulverband 2005) practical alternatives to large-scale studies such as VERA.

His current interests include the relationship both professional learning in school and extracurricular activities and experiences (see the project LISA & KO), especially with regard to class-specific influences (see the CLEVER project to the holiday effect and the investigation of the caravan effect in the development of professional services). Since 2011 he is with Axel Backhaus, Babette Danckwerts (until 2012 ) and Erika Brinkmann ( from 2012), the quarterly supplement primary school parents about the journal Primary School currently the Primary Association out.

Public criticism

Meanwhile, doubts about Brügelmanns methods are discussed in the media. The mirror Brügelmann referred to as " one of the most important door opener for the new spell anarchy." His basic ideas and their related methods such as the method " Read by writing " by Jürgen rich are partly responsible for that, especially weaker students as dyslexic or children would be left behind with a migrant background or from disadvantaged backgrounds in teaching correct written language - with serious consequences for their further life. (see his reply in the Tagesspiegel and his co-authored with Wolfgang Eichler critical overview reading and writing lessons today: counter ideological reductions, for options of perspective and greater pluralism. )
